19thCentury Vineyard, 21stCentury Wine
Garnacha Vella (Old Grenache)
The project involves the purchase of one hectare vineyard in the Appellation of Origin Valdeorras (Galicia, NW Spain) where there are still 6oo tree stumps of Grenache shark, about 120 years old.
With the grapes of these tree stumps, about 1200.-1500 bottles will be elaborated annually, to be sold into the market around 25 € for the most discerning palates and seekers of new flavors.
I am the vine grower, son and grandson of winemakers. Two winemakers and a winery will be also participating in the project, they will yield us their facilities for the elaboration, aging and bottling, all free of charge.
In addition, this winery will also support the project financiallyand a design study will contribute whit the brand image and the label, all for free.
We have been able to localize the heirs of this parcel and negotiated with them the purchase of the property with the objective of recovering the grapevines to elaborate one of the most exclusive wines.
Because of the disease (phylloxera), the restructuring of vineyards, and the characteristics of the Galician smallholding, to find a farm with these characteristics, and having such wealth is practically a miracle.
